Established in 1963, when Hanover Housing Association was founded, today the Hanover Group is one of the largest specialist providers of retirement housing, related support and services in England.

Our mission is ‘to deliver excellent living environments and tailored services that support independence and individuality for older people’. We:

• Manage some 19,000 retirement and Extra Care properties, including 500 on behalf of external organisations

• Continue to lead the sector in building Extra Care housing, with estates in 57 locations. We have one of the largest building programmes of Extra Care housing in the UK

• Have a dedicated workforce of nearly 1,000 individuals who provide our 30,000 residents and customers with a highly professional and personalised service

Our vision is to be the number one provider for older people looking for high quality housing and related services.

Christine Armstrong, Head of Human Resources at Hanover, highlights: “The provision of relevant, high quality and accessible learning and development opportunities for our staff is a key aspect of achieving our organisational goals. With that in mind we have found TAP®’s approach to training design, delivery and evaluation invaluable.”

Andy Lancaster, Learning and Development Manager, reflects on the impact of the TAP® methodology to Hanover’s practice:

“A key part of our learning and development strategy has been to establish a team that can design and deliver training to the highest standards and that provides role models in the commitment to on-going professional development. The TAP® Diploma in Learning and Development has enabled our  internal trainers to progress successfully from technical service delivery roles to dedicated trainer positions.”

“They are now able to design and deliver learning with understanding, confidence and enthusiasm and the TAP® Diploma course has provided the foundation from which we have approached the re-design of our in-house Estate Manager Modular Training programme.”

“The newly updated course objectives, technical content, higher levels of learner participation and embedded evaluation have placed Hanover in a position where the external accreditation of our programme is a genuine possibility.”

The approach has also influenced our approach to other training initiatives including the:

• Provision of an interactive corporate induction for all staff

• Launch of a new series of in-house optional seminars to support our service delivery including themes such as understanding sensory impairment and bereavement awareness

• Provision of a range of vocational qualifications in housing, customer service, business administration and ICT

• Implementation of the training capabilities of the Select HR system to electronically record professional development, undertake needs analyses and enable online training requests and bookings

• Development of an accredited management development programme

Andy concludes: “Hanover’s award of Gold Partner status with the Training Foundation underpins our commitment to delivering excellence in learning and development and we value the benefit of embedding TAP® principles in our organisational practice.”

“Going forward, we intend using Training Foundation programmes as a benchmark for the further development of our Learning and Development team’s skills and approach.”

“Together with our successful Investor in People re-assessment in 2009, TAP® ’s Gold Partner status provides external recognition for the foundation we have set in place for a significant and innovative learning and development programme that will benefit all our staff and help us achieve our ambitious organisational goals.”
