Designing Performance Support Materials


Introduction

This exemplar blended learning course is aimed at trainers, subject experts and others with a responsibility for creating course handouts, job aids, procedures manuals, help systems, just-in-time learning materials, decision aids or any other materials designed to support employees in their work performance.

It has been designed and developed by Director Clive Shepherd, who will also be the lead tutor for the course in 2007.

Learning topics

  • The drivers for and scope of performance support.
  • Top-level design: establishing goals, researching the audience, looking at practical constraints, determining a strategy, electing the most appropriate platform(s), selecting development and delivery tools; allocating roles.
  • Detailed design – categorising information types, using the appropriate strategy for each information type, selecting media.
  • Development – writing effectively; sourcing/creating images, audio, video and animation; using authoring tools; cross-referencing/tagging; testing, etc.
  • Implementation and evaluation issues – establishing communities of practice; providing human support; establishing means for feedback; measuring impact.
