The Trainer's Toolkit

I’m often asked by delegates for hints and tips, and I was recently asked, “What things should I have in my trainer’s bag?”  Having spent several years training overseas, I ensured I carried as much as I could in my hand luggage, not trusting airport baggage handling…  Anyway, the following is what fits into my backpack:

The Trainer’s Toolkit

  • Whiteboard markers
  • Flipchart markers
  • Black & red ballpoint pens
  • Propelling pencil
  • Post-It notes
  • Flash drives (the bigger the better)
  • CD/DVD with course materials
  • LED key-ring torch
  • Swiss Army knife (not for hand luggage!)
  • Batteries for PowerPoint presenter (‘clicker’)
  • Wet wipes (also great for screens and whiteboards)
  • Water
  • Cereal bars
  • Plasters
  • Aspirin!

The list is by no means exhaustive, and it excludes the usual phone and laptop chargers, spare change, emergency credit card, chewing gum etc.  All of this fits nicely into an ‘urban backpack’ (Swiss Gear ones are great, stylish and usually found at TKMaxx!).  It all depends on how much you’re willing (or able) to lug around on your shoulder.

What’s in your toolkit?
